1986 Mets Getting Multi-Part ’30 for 30′ From ESPN
ESPN announced today that production has begun on a multi-part documentary series about the 1986 New York Mets. Jimmy Kimmel and “Cousin Sal” are listed as executive producers on the project.
The ’86 Mets are one of the most memorable groups in baseball history. The way they won — BUCKNER! — plays a role in that honor, but the cast of characters is the real key. From Keith Hernandez to Lenny Dykstra, Doc Gooden to Darryl Strawberry, they were unique and perfect for New York at that time. Fans gravitated towards them and their blue-collar attitude, and they truly made their mark on the city. The 1986 World Series win was the last for the Mets organization, though they reached the World Series twice since then, falling to the Yankees in 2000 and Royals in 2015.
“This is going to be a lot of fun,” Kimmel wrote on Twitter.
As far as the docuseries goes, it’s going to be a fun ride for sure. The partying that went on during ’86 is legendary (and thrillingly detailed in Jeff Pearlman’s book, Boys Will Be Boys). He’s definitely someone they need to contact for the series.
Per ESPN, the series will feature “hours of never-before-seen footage of the ‘86 Mets team.”
