3 Slumping Baltimore Orioles Not Named Chris Davis
A look at three Baltimore Orioles players (not named Chris Davis) that are having a tough time in 2019.
The words “slump” and “Orioles” have been tied together a lot this season, mainly a result of Chris Davis’ poor start at the plate. In the last week, though, Davis has gotten himself a real batting average, now at .089, so it’s time to look beyond the former All-Star first baseman. Plenty of other Orioles have struggled thus far through 18 games even though their 7-11 start is sort of a pleasant surprise.

Cedric Mullins, OF
Mullins, who has played in all but one game for Baltimore in 2019, is one of six qualified Orioles’ hitters. That said, his basic numbers aren’t pretty — .104 BA, .402 OPS — and he’s only recorded one hit in his last 21 ABs. Plus, according to Statcast, Mullins is in the bottom 7% in the MLB in Exit Velocity (82.9) and Hard Hit Percentage (21.1).
Richie Martin, SS
Martin has played well at short this year, which was expected, but the issue for him has always been at the plate. He’s struggled in the past, even in Single-A (.238 BA in 100+ games), and this season hasn’t changed anyone’s mind. In 16 games, Martin is 6-for-38 (.158 BA) with a ton of strikeouts (17). And while Davis gets all the headlines because of past success, Martin’s Whiff Percentage (41.8) and Strikeout Percentage (39.5) are a bit worse than Davis (39.7, 39.2) and the team-worsts overall.
Miguel Castro, RP
After proving himself reliable in two seasons for the O’s, Castro has been anything but in 2019; he’s been banged around often in eight appearances and currently has an ERA of 9.31. Of his eight appearances, all two innings or less, he’s allowed at least one earned run on five occasions and only once has he had a totally clean outing with zero baserunners.
