91st Academy Awards Ratings Up Double-Digits Over 2018
Less than 24 hours after the 91st Academy Awards aired on ABC, there’s obviously a lot to talk about. There were upsets in a few categories — Green Book (Best Picture) and Olivia Colman (Best Actress) — as well as the first trailer for Scorsese’s The Irishman, Spike Lee’s beef with Green Book, and a controversial tweet from POTUS. For 2018, it’s pretty much standard.
The one thing a lot of people were worried about, however, was the TV rating. After all, last year was a flop, leaving people wondering if anyone still cared. But this year with no host, they pulled it off. Per Deadline, the 91st Academy Awards was up double-digits over last year’s show.
Running around three hours and 21 minutes, Sunday’s Oscars snared a 21.6/36 in metered markets results in the 8 – 11:15 PM ET slot.
For the first time in several years, that’s a distinct rise for the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences’ show. In fact, in an era when awards shows across the board have been taking viewership and demographic hit, last night’s Oscars was up 14.3% over last year’s Jimmy Kimmel-hosted affair.
