Netflix Gives Amy Poehler Her Directorial Debut

Another day, another project announced by Netflix.

It’s become clockwork for the streaming juggernaut to take risks on creative people and allow them a long enough leash to hang themselves.

This time it’s SNL alumnus/sitcom legend/comedy superstar Amy Poehler that is finally getting her opportunity to direct a film: Wine Country.

Unlike someone like Jordan Peele (Get Out), Amy Poehler is going straight to her comfort zone with her first movie: Comedy.

Wine Country is about a girls trip to Napa Valley to celebrate a 50th birthday.

Of course it will likely be funny, but that story by a woman approaching her 50th birthday (46) seems as if it there will be tinges of something personal in it, and her fingerprints will be all over it.

Along with directing it, Amy Poehler will also star in it and be producing it.

She’ll be utilizing her friends and frequent collaborators, namely Tina Fey and May Rudolph, so the familiarity and chemistry will be there.

This is a personal project.

I don’t know that the film will be transcendent or anything like that, but the odds are heavily in its favor that it will be a fun movie to watch, particularly since it will be streaming on a service that almost everyone owns anyways.

More importantly, they’re giving a woman who has proven herself in every other facet of creating movies/tv shows an opportunity to make her own mark.

It’s honestly weird that’s a conversation we’re still having, but little by little, it will eventually be the norm.
