Big 12 Teams Off to a Rough Start in 2020

At the time of posting, three Big 12 games have been played this season from start to finish. All were today in Week 2 against assumed cupcakes, but West Virginia was the only team to take care of business. No. 23 Iowa State and Kansas State were both upset, and both were double-digit favorites beforehand.

Iowa State took a slim 14-10 lead into halftime against Louisiana but they got blasted in the second half. Louisiana shut out the Cyclones 21-0 in the second half to secure a 31-14 victory. The Ragin’ Cajuns defense forced two turnovers and held quarterback Brock Purdy and the Cyclones passing game to just 4.1 yards per attempt. Needless to say, they won’t be ranked when the new set comes out this week.

Kansas State entered Saturday as 14.5-point favorites over Arkansas State but the Red Wolves played spoiler in a big way. They shredded the Wildcat defense for 489 total yards and, despite losing the turnover battle, went on to pick up a 35-31 win.

West Virginia handled Eastern Kentucky 59-10 in Morgantown for the conference’s only win thus far. They outgained EKU 624-206 and scored seven touchdowns.

Luckily for the Big 12, five more teams have games today, and all are against lower-level programs. It’s already an embarrassing day, but if there are any more upsets today it’s really going to hurt their stock.
