The Biggest MLB Crowd This Year Belongs To…Oakland?!?

On Saturday night, with their rivals — the San Francisco Giants — in town, the Oakland Athletics removed the big green tarps on their upper deck. The top section, known as Mount Davis, hadn’t been opened up for an A’s baseball game in 13 years, per Yahoo Sports. It was a special night in the Bay Area, one that actually brought in the biggest crowd of the year. Not only in Oakland, though. The 56,310 fans in attendance were the most in any MLB park this year.

Besides that honor, the crowd was the biggest in Oakland Coliseum history.

The reason for all of this? Well, the Athletics went 21-6 in the 27 games prior to the All-Star break, so the fans are obviously more engaged now. Also, it was a Saturday night and the franchise was honoring their 1989 World Series team. Season ticket holders were also treated to a special panel before the game featuring COO Chris Giles, in-game host Kara Tsuboi, and A’s legend Ray Fosse.

Among the players honored from the 1989 team: Jose CansecoDennis Eckersley, Rickey Henderson, and former NL MVP Dave Parker.

Honestly, I couldn’t believe this happened. The announcers were alluding to a potential record being broken during the broadcast but I didn’t actually believe them. I mean, this is the same team that was drawing less than 8,000 fans for games earlier in the season.

Sub-8,000 Crowds at Oakland Coliseum Pre-All-Star Break:

  • 4/2 vs. TEX (7,416)
  • 4/4 vs. TEX (7,908)
  • 4/16 vs. CWS (7,479)
  • 5/7 vs. HOU (7,360)
  • 5/23 vs. SEA (6,991)
  • 5/29 vs. TB (7,521)
  • 5/30 vs. TB (6,705)
  • 6/7 vs. KC (7,963)

While the record-breaking night was awesome for baseball, it’s also impressive how many fans they got the night before Saturday night: 45,606.
