Colin Cowherd Puts Baker Mayfield Debut Into Perspective
With folks around the world anointing Baker Mayfield as Cleveland’s new king, Colin Cowherd wants everyone to just slow down a bit.
During the latest edition of Thursday Night Football, Baker Mayfield came to the rescue for the Cleveland Browns. They were down 14-0 to the New York Jets when he came in but by the time the game was over, they had secured a 21-17 victory. While folks around the world are anointing him as Cleveland’s new king, Colin Cowherd wants everyone to just slow down a bit.
"He didn't scale Everest last night. This wasn't Kilimanjaro. It was the Jets at home with a rookie quarterback on a short week… Baker did some nice stuff and he deserves some praise, but no statues and parades." — @ColinCowherd pic.twitter.com/jYXt0Ubx6z

In my opinion, Cowherd is totally right. Yes, Baker should be starting for the Browns, and he did jolt life into the franchise after Tyrod Taylor was ineffective, but people should slow down a bit. After all, it was just one game. Tons of guys have had solid games to start their careers only to flop. Remember David Carr? He beat the Cowboys in his debut then became a national punchline.
To his credit, the Browns punted on all six possessions with Taylor at the helm. After Baker came in, they totally took control of the game.

It should be noted that Cowherd and Mayfield have some history; before Baker ever took an NFL snap, the two had it out on Cowherd’s Fox Sports studio show.

Cleveland, now 1-1-1 on the season, will travel to Oakland next week to play the Raiders. If he has a crummy performance, it’ll give Colin’s take a bit more credence. If he goes out there and balls out, though, Cowherd will have to give credit where it’s due.
