Darnell Savage Jr. Defies Mock Drafts, Goes 21st to Packers
Few players improved their draft stock in the last few months more than Darnell Savage Jr., a safety who played four years for the Terps. Mel Kiper Jr. noticed, praising him as a diamond in the rough, while also making him a first-round selection in his final mock draft. Todd McShay also had the All-Big Ten defensive back going in Round 1.
Neither McShay, Kiper or any of the other mock drafts I wrote about had Darnell Savage Jr. going higher than No. 25, though, and still, he proved them all wrong on Thursday night.
The Green Bay Packers took Savage Jr. with the 21st pick, giving Maryland first-round picks in back-to-back NFL Drafts.

Ironically, the other major prospect from a DMV-area college — Virginia safety Juan Thornhill — was projected to go No. 21 to Green Bay by Roto Experts. Thornhill is still on the board right now but he’ll go before the second round wraps up tomorrow.
