Delaware Blue Hens, Delaware State Hornets Excluded From New Delaware Sports Betting Launch
Besides Las Vegas, Delaware was one of the few places in America where you could go in and somewhat gamble on sports. By somewhat, I mean, you could bet exclusively on football parlays at one of the state’s three full-throttle casinos. Now, however, after the Supreme Court shot down the 1992 law that prohibited sports gambling, the state is a full-on participant in the sports gambling world.
Delaware Governor John Carney is supposed to join other state officials today at Dover Downs to launch a complete sports book at the state’s three casinos: Dover, Delaware Park & Casino, and Harrington Raceway & Casino. Instead of just parlays, Delaware will be the second state where you can bet on single games, with three other states expected to follow suit by football season.
The three states are New Jersey, Mississippi, and West Virginia.
While only professional sports were outlined in most reports, USA Today also noted that collegiate sports should be offered as well. And because of regulations, the collegiate programs within the state will have to be excluded.
Per the USA Today article:
“While the state didn’t immediately announce whether it would offer college betting, it is expected college football will be offered. Under the state’s lottery regulations, no bets can be taken on the state’s two Division I colleges (Delaware State and the University of Delaware).”
Luckily, odds at the two D-1 programs in Delaware are few and far between, anyway. Regular season football games at Delaware and Delaware State are rarely given odds, while basketball at Delaware State only had 25 percent of their games (8-of-32) lined last season, per OddsShark. On the flip side, the Blue Hens’ men’s basketball program is the one sport in the state where betting odds are a normal occurrence. Last season, they had 81 percent of their games lined (27-of-33).
With the new developments attached to the Delaware sports betting launch, folks will be able to officially place their bets at 1:30 P.M ET today (Tuesday, June 5th).
