A Basketball Family? Don Mattingly and Preston Mattingly Both Have Wicked Jump Shots
This is a few weeks old, but former New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly has a wicked step-back jump shot. Mattingly, now the manager of the Miami Marlins, was blessed with the opportunity to shoot some hoops at the Milwaukee Bucks arena while they were playing the Brewers. Dressed in a typical dad outfit, Mattingly was seen by The Athletic’s Jay King showing off his lefty jumper…and it was smooth.

Of course, basketball is in the Mattingly blood. While playing at Memorial High School in Indiana, Don was an all-conference basketball player and his son, Preston Mattingly, has some seriously impressive hoop exploits himself. Preston, after playing several years of minor league baseball, was good enough to play Division-1 basketball even though he was much older than everyone else. In three seasons at Lamar University, the 6-foot-2 guard played in 72 games and shot 45.9 percent from the field. Over the course of his final three games at Lamar, he averaged 16.3 points per game while shooting over 60 percent. During this stretch, Preston also grabbed 6.7 boards and recorded 1.7 steals per game.
