The press box at a sporting event is a great place to be. More than anything else, it’s a community. So after the tragedy yesterday at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, MD, it’s no surprise that there was a memorial left at the Camden Yards press box seat in which John McNamara (or ‘Johnny Mac’) once sat. McNamara was among the five Capital Gazette employees who were shot to death in their newsroom on Thursday afternoon.

The picture was posted by MASN’s Roch Kubatko, who after hearing of the news yesterday, said John was in the Orioles’ press box “just a few days ago”. He added that the veteran journalist was “such a nice guy”. It should be noted that countless other sports writers chimed in with fond remembrances on McNamara.
John was in the Camden Yards press box just a few days ago. Such a nice guy. Such a tragic turn of events. Another shooting leaves me deeply saddened and intensely angry. https://t.co/lchGHSBV6x

Recently, McNamara had been covering sports news in Bowie, including the Orioles’ Double-A affiliate, the Bowie Baysox. However, over his long career, he had covered just about everything under the sun when it comes to sports in the DMV area. A University of Maryland alumni, McNamara was one of the team’s most respected beat reporters and wrote two Maryland-focused books in his career.
Rob Hiaasen, Wendi Winters, Gerald Fischman, and Rebecca Smith were the four other Capital employees who tragically passed away on Thursday.
There has been a GoFundMe page set up to help the journalists of the paper. You can help them out here.
