Former Orioles All-Star Jonathan Schoop Signs With Twins
Former Baltimore Orioles star Jonathan Schoop signed with the Minnesota Twins.
As a member of the Baltimore Orioles, Jonathan Schoop was an absolute stud. He had multiple stellar seasons in the Charm City, including a 2017 campaign that resulted in his first All-Star selection. Despite that, Schoop was part of Baltimore’s reboot at the trade deadline last year, eventually landing in Milwaukee for their playoff push.
Unfortunately, the good times stayed in Baltimore, and Schoop’s stock fell during his time in Milwaukee. He hit just .202 in 46 regular season games for the Brewers and was a non-factor for his new team in the playoffs. Though the Brewers had some success in the postseason, Schoop was used sparingly and went hitless in eight at-bats.
After the season, the Brewers didn’t tender him a deal that, according to Camden Chat, would have been “an estimated $10 million.” Instead, Schoop hit the open market and eventually found a suitor that will pay him less than he earned in 2018.
Schoop, after spending about a week on the market, landed a one-year, $7.5 million deal with the Minnesota Twins.
According to ESPN, Brewers general manager David Stearns called the Schoop trade “a bad deal” after he was released last month.
On the bright side, the ball is in Schoop’s court now. If he plays well, like we know he can, a bigger deal will await before the 2020 season.
