Former WVU Star Will Grier Getting First NFL Start in Week 16

With the Carolina Panthers out of postseason contention, interim head coach Perry Fewell is giving quarterback Will Grier a shot to lead the team in their Week 16 game against Indianapolis. The Panthers had been in the hands of Kyle Allen since Week 3, but Allen struggled after winning his first four starts. Carolina has dropped six consecutive games and seven of their last eight.

Grier, who played collegiately at both Florida and West Virginia, was taken in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by Carolina.

A proven winner, Grier went 6-0 at Florida and 15-7 at West Virginia. His 71 touchdown passes for the Mountaineers ranks second all-time, and in 2018, he finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting behind Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, and Dwayne Haskins. West Virginia finished the 2018 season ranked 20th overall in the AP poll.

Grier is yet to take a snap at the NFL level, but Fewell is confident in what the 6-foot-2 quarterback can do.

Fewell said Grier has shown improvement running the scout team the past few months. Now he’ll get his chance running the Carolina offense, something he has done on a limited basis since training camp.

“He’s gotten better with command of the huddle,” Fewell said. “When I see him on the look squad, his voice inflection is good because we ask him to do some hard counts. We’ve asked him to do some things the opponent’s quarterbacks will do. His ability to scramble and throw on the run has gotten better.”
