Four New States Expected To Legalize Sports Gambling Quickly After Ruling

On Monday, the Supreme Court struck down a 26-year-old law that put a damper on sports gambling across the country. Now, states in the U.S are free to choose whether or not they want to allow gambling on sports.

Per ESPN:

“The court ruled 6-3 to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), a 1992 law that barred state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.”

“Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own,” the court wrote its opinion.”

Several news outlets have reported that four states are expected to move swiftly in their legalizations: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Mississippi, and West Virginia. After that, several more will follow. Per ESPN, “more than a dozen having introduced sports betting bills this year.”

In 2017, CBS News reported that as many as 32 states could gave legal sports betting within five years.

The 1992 law allowed four states which previously had sports betting to continue: Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana. Nevada, however, is the only place where you can bet on a single sporting event. That will surely be changing very soon.
