GW Hires Former Mount St. Mary’s Head Coach Jamion Christian
It didn’t take long for George Washington to find their new head coach. On Thursday, the university announced that Jamion Christian would be their guy, taking over for Maurice Joseph.
Christian is familiar with the DMV area; he’s a native of Virginia and spent six seasons leading Mount St. Mary’s basketball program in Emmitsburg, MD.
We are thrilled to announce that Jamion Christian, who led Mount St. Mary’s to two NCAA Tournament appearances and turned Siena into one of the nation's most improved teams in 2018-19, has been hired as our head coach. #RaiseHigh https://t.co/W6UMYGdOxC pic.twitter.com/lOtQVPOCir

Last year, after back-to-back winning seasons at The Mount, including an NCAA Tournament win in 2017, Christian was hired by Siena in Albany, NY. In his lone season in Upstate NY, he improved Siena’s record from 8-24 to 17-16 while vastly improving their defense and effort.
“I am honored to be able to return home to take a job I have dreamed of having since I was a child,” said Christian. “I’d like to thank President Thomas LeBlanc for this incredible opportunity. It was a difficult decision to leave Siena because I absolutely loved the people, but there were only a few jobs that could take me away, and I can’t wait to get to work in Foggy Bottom. GW has a rich basketball history and the potential to become a juggernaut in the Atlantic 10. I’m looking forward to bringing an exciting style of basketball to the nation’s capital that all of the Buff and Blue faithful will be proud of. Our brand of basketball contains enthusiasm and great connectivity. We can’t wait to pump our love into our players each and every day. The journey to be at our best begins immediately. I am so incredibly excited to be your head coach.”

Under Joseph, the Colonials finished the season ranked No. 291 by KenPom, including a No. 320 offensive and No. 209 defensive rank. Christian’s system, which puts a high priority on defensive pressure and three-point shooting, seems like a great fit.
