Herm Edwards Brought Along Jets, Giants Legends to Coach at Arizona State
Herm Edwards brought along former Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce and former Jets center Kevin Mawae to coach with him at Arizona State.
During his time as an NFL head coach, Herm Edwards was always a great motivator. Then as a member of ESPN’s staff, he came across the same way. Now, after getting tabbed as the Arizona State’s head coach before the 2018 season, his job will be to motivate a much younger group of guys.
Edwards, famous for his “play to win the game” speech with the New York Jets, is an NFL guy that’s gone back to school. In doing so, he’s brought along an NFL mentality and plans to operate the Sun Devils’ program like a pro squad. What goes into that? Bringing NFL guys along to teach the kiddos.
This year, Edwards has two New York football legends on his staff, both guys with little coaching experience. Antonio Pierce, a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants, is in charge of Arizona State’s linebackers while Kevin Mawae, a seven-time first team All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowler, is one of Herm’s offensive analysts. Mawae, for the record, played with the Jets before and during Herm’s entire five-year tenure (2001-2005).
Unfortunately, the national media doesn’t think much of the Sun Devils, although they have a preseason All-American at wide receiver (N’Keal Harry) and a senior quarterback. ESPN has ASU ranked No. 11 in their Pac-12 power rankings and pegged to finish dead-last in the Pac-12 South.
