Kid Cudi Snags First #1 Single with “The Scotts”
Kid Cudi inspired a generation of artists. He led a charge in the late 2000’s that proved hip-hop artists could have feelings too. While I hate the name, it was emo-rap, and it was fantastic. Man on the Moon is one of the best concept albums of my lifetime and pretty close to a masterpiece. With all of that, Cudder had never had a single top the charts, per HipHopDX.
That changed this week with “The Scotts,” the first release from…The Scotts, a dream-team duo featuring Kid Cudi (real name Scott Mescudi) and Travis Scott. Scott and Scott, very cool.
According to Billboard via DX, “The Scotts” totaled 42.2 million streams (U.S.) and sold over 65,000 digital downloads in its first week. Per iTunes Charts, Cudi’s single with Kanye West, “Erase Me,” topped out at #4 in 2010.
Having Travis Scott help Cudi snag his first chart-topping single is fitting. Scott is one of many mainstreamers who have been influenced by the Moon Man. “He’s part of my story,” Scott told MTV in 2015. And after first meeting Cudi, Travis not only admitted to crying, but he also said he felt like his life was complete.
Scott and Cudi also teamed up on “STOP TRYING TO BE GOD” off Scott’s Grammy-nominated and triple-platinum ASTROWORLD album.
“The Scotts” was produced by longtime Cudi collaborators Plain Pat and Dot Da Genius, as well as Daytrip.
It’s nice to see Cudi getting back to more rappity-rap stuff, amirite?
