LOOK: George Mason Basketball Alumni Squad Has Dope TBT Jerseys
It’s almost time for George Mason basketball…in July! Check out the jerseys the GMU alumni team (The Green Machine) will wear in the upcoming TBT.
In just a few weeks, George Mason basketball legend Lamar Butler will lead a team of GMU alumni — the Green Machine — back into the spotlight for a tournament very similar to the one they dominated in 2006. Instead of lifelong glory and recognition, though, like Butler and his mates gobbled up by making the Final Four, they’re hoping to win $2 million cash, the going rate for a TBT Championship.
For the uninitiated, The Basketball Tournament (or TBT) is a sprawling event with 64 teams in nine cities across three weeks (July 19th to August 6th). All games will air on the ESPN family of networks. It’s a pretty big deal, you’ll be surprised how many faces you recognize.
Butler is a guy George Mason basketball fans are very familiar with, but he’s serving as the team’s head coach this time around. Don’t worry your green-and-gold heart, though, Folarin Campbell and Will Thomas, both from their 2006 Final Four team, are leading the charge. Other former George Mason players on the squad include Erik Copes (’11-’15), Isaiah Tate (’07-’11), Mike Morrison (’08-’12), Ryan Pearson (’08-’12) and Bryon Allen (’10-’14). As reinforcements, The Green Machine has two high-powered bucket-getters along for the ride, former Georgetown leading scorer Austin Freeman (’07-’11) and 2018 BBL leading scorer Philip Scrubb.
If that’s not enough George Mason nostalgia to get you excited, their official TBT jerseys will do the trick. They look very similar to the green-and-gold duds that graced the cover of Sports Illustrated the last time they were in a huge, high-stakes basketball tournament.
Mason will play in the Richmond Regional, starting on Friday, July 26th, with several other DMV-area teams. As the No. 3 seed, they play a group of Richmond alumni, the No. 6 seed, at 6:40 P.M ET on Friday. Alumni groups from UMBC, West Virginia, and Old Dominion are also in GMU’s group.
If you’re really down for the cause, you can tickets here. All games are at The Siegel Center, VCU’s home floor, and one ticket is good for the whole day of hoops.
If not, all Friday and Saturday games will be on ESPN3. Sunday’s regional final is on ESPN.
