Lorena Bobbitt, Manassas Featured in Amazon True Crime Docuseries
True crime fans will enjoy Amazon Prime’s new docuseries about Lorena Bobbitt’s infamous crime in Manassas, VA.
Back in 1993, the small Northern Virginia town of Manassas was in the national spotlight because a resident of the town cut off her husband’s penis. The resident, Lorena Bobbitt, is now telling her story in an Amazon Prime docuseries, as is her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt and several others closely involved.
The new series from executive producer Jordan Peele, titled Lorena, is told in four parts and became available for streaming via Amazon Prime on Friday, February 15th.
And while the basics of the story are known well, the docuseries goes far deeper into the gender, race, and abuse aspects of the Bobbitt saga. Viewers get walked through the trials that followed the act, how the early-90s media coverage framed things and, through the scope of the #MeToo movement, why Lorena Bobbitt actually did what she did to her husband.
Overall, the series is fascinating to watch, especially for someone, like myself, who wasn’t old enough to understand when it was unfolding 25 years ago. You’ll hear both sides of the story and everything in between, yet it’s not really about picking sides at this point. Instead, the real heart of the series is the understanding that a headline rarely tells the entire story.
