Maurice Joseph Fired By George Washington After 9-24 Season
One day after George Mason eliminated George Washington from the Atlantic 10 Tournament, GW athletic director Tanya Vogel announced that they’d be parting ways with head coach Maurice Joseph, per NBC Washington.
This year, the Colonials went just 9-24 and finished ranked No. 290 by KenPom. The mark was severely disappointing, especially when you realize that George Washington was ranked almost 100 spots higher by KenPom to start the season (No. 192). While they did win a game in the conference tournament, a 68-64 overtime win against UMass, they finished the regular season with just four wins in 18 conference games.
Joseph took over the program at the start of the 2016-17 season and has seen his team’s record get worse each season.
Maurice Joseph GW Coaching Record
- 2016-17: 20-15, 10-8 A10
- 2017-18: 15-18, 7-11 A10
- 2018-19: 9-24, 4-14 A10
Joseph and his assistant coaches are no longer listed on GW’s official site, according to The GW Hatchet, though one of his assistants, former Duke star Greg Paulus, actually seems like a solid choice to take over. Watching the Colonials up close this year, Paulus had a big role on the sidelines and often times seemed like the actual head coach. If it was his team officially, at the very least, he’d be great on the recruiting trail. Also, another former Duke point guard, Bobby Hurley, has had success recently at the college level (Buffalo, Arizona State).
But, that’s just my thought; Vogel said in NBC Washington’s report that the school “will conduct a national search” to replace Joseph.
