MiLB: Potomac Nationals Getting New City & Stadium

The Potomac Nationals will be playing in a new city, and stadium come 2020.

Since 1984, the Potomac Nationals have played at Pfitzner Stadium (or”The Pfitz”) in Woodbridge, VA. The venue, however, isn’t exactly state-of-the-art so Minor League Baseball required the team to change stadiums by the end of 2018. Several locations in Northern Va were considered for a new building — including Fairfax — before eventually settling in mid-November on Fredericksburg, VA.

Fredericksburg, which will build a new 5,000-seat stadium, will begin hosting the Potomac Nationals in 2020, according to WRIC, though the team will likely change names by then.

Per WRIC:

On Tuesday, Fredericksburg City Council approved the development and shared use agreement with the Potomac Nationals for the team to move.

A $35 million stadium will be built at Celebrate Virginia South by the Potomac Nationals with the City of Fredericksburg considered a tenant, paying $1.05 million annually over 30 years.

“It’s really providing something for the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the region, to kind of rally around to enjoy,” said council member Matthew Kelly. “We will be having concerts. We will have theater events.”

Revenue from the multipurpose stadium will cover the costs for the city.

While it’s a bit of a bummer the P-Nats are moving further from Fairfax, the team absolutely needed some new digs. With that said, they’ve been at “The Pfitz” for a long time so we’ll be sure to cover the venue’s swan song this coming summer; the same goes for the opening of the new joint.
