Business Wars: Wondery Shines Light On Epic HBO, Netflix, and Blockbuster Battle

As the world continues to embrace podcasting, Wondery — an LA-based audio company — has emerged as one of the industry heavyweights. In the past year, they’ve introduced numerous high-quality programs, highlighted by the wildly popular Dirty John series (in partnership with the Los Angeles Time) and Young Charlie — both reaching №1 on iTunes Podcast Chart. On February 6th, they put into play their newest creation, Business Wars, a show that outlines some of the best head-to-head brand battles of our time.

And while I can’t wait to listen to Nike vs. Adidas or even Burger King vs. McDonald’s, the battle they kicked off with is even more intriguing — Blockbuster vs. Netflix.

The show has a far reach nowadays because of the brand-power that Netflix brings to the table. However, for people who lived through the physical-rental era, there’s an even bigger draw: finding out what exactly happened.

Business Wars, now five episodes in, uses a mixed bag of storytelling tools. Sometimes the listener gets narration, sometimes they’re hearing voice actors reading a script; either way, the episodes fly by and hold on tight.

Also, don’t be fooled by the title. In addition to Netflix, and Blockbuster, Business Wars also offers compelling information on HBO — the third company involved in the Battle for America’s Eyeballs.

Three more episodes are planned for this version of Business Wars, with new battles to follow. The Netflix/Blockbuster/HBO story is based on a book by Gina Keating — Netflixed: The Epic Battle for America’s Eyeballs — with narration by David Brown. The podcast debuted at №3 on the iTunes Podcast Chart (February 6th, 2018).
