NFL: Chargers 2018 Attendance at StubHub Center is Plain Sad

The (temporary) home of the Los Angeles Chargers is laughably small by NFL standards.

When I was flying around the internet today, I stumbled across an article about the “viability of Chargers in Los Angeles.” It was a good read, but also something that should have been considered before they bailed on San Diego. By the way, I think everyone still calls them the San Diego Chargers. Anyhow, the post made me look into the Chargers attendance this year at the StubHub Center this year…and it was bad.

Through three home games, the Chargers have had just 76,110 fans through the gate — that’s less than 26,000 per game. The StubHub Center is laughably small by NFL standards, with just 27,000 potential seats, but they still can’t even sell the joint out. Per ESPN, they are only filling the place to 94-percent capacity.

Among all NFL teams, they’re the only one with less than 100,000 fans, and that includes several teams who have played one less game. And if that’s not bad enough, the fans that are coming are mostly from the opposing teams.

And before I finish, let me give you another stat. Five NFL teams (Denver, Dallas, Green Bay, and both NY teams) are averaging more fans than the Chargers have combined. One could argue it’s because their venue is small but they’re not selling it out anyway!

On the bright side, the team is pretty good this year…and they’ll have a new (shared) stadium soon.
