NY Mets Broadcast Team Voted Top Crew in MLB
Readers from The Athletic were asked to vote on the MLB’s local broadcast teams, considering play-by-play, pre and postgame shows, on-field reporting, and more. Each area was rated on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the best.
After all the votes were tallied up, the New York Mets Gear broadcast team — Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, Gary Cohen, Steve Gelbs — was on top.
If you’re familiar with the team, it’s not a surprise. The group, especially Gary-Keith-Ron, is wildly popular. They have their own verified Instagram account (@GaryKeithRon) and a loyal following wherever they set their mics up. In fact, they do such a good job entertaining Mets fans, it’s not uncommon to see members of the team getting the call up to the big show (national playoff broadcasts) when there aren’t any more local broadcasts to do.
Cohen is a bona fide legend in the play-by-play game, and his “It’s Outta Here!” call will go down in Mets lore until the end of time. Keith and Ron are both World Series champs (as teammates no less) who have transitioned seamlessly into color commentary for SNY.
In his career, Hernandez won an MVP, 11 Gold Glove awards, and finished with a .296 batting average (2,182 hits). He came over to the Mets in 1983 via trade and stayed in Queens until 1989. Darling was also an all-star and Gold Glove winner, finishing his 13-year career with a 3.96 ERA and 136-116 record. He broke in with the Mets (also in 1983) and hung around until 1991 when he was shipped to Montreal.
