O’s Cedric Mullins Has MLB’s Worst Batting Average
The O’s lost again on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins. Starting pitcher Dylan Bundy turned in a decent six-inning performance but their offense struggled with 10 combined strikeouts.
As a whole, the offense has been mediocre this year, ranking 18th in team batting average (.239) and 19th in team OPS (.704) and home runs (25). Looking at their numbers, though, it’s clear a few guys are pulling the overall mark down: Cedric Mullins, Richie Martin, and Chris Davis, all regular starters, are hitting below .181 on the year.
On the bright side, Davis and Martin have improved recently. Davis, who didn’t have an actual batting average before last week, has had seven knocks in his last 21 at-bats, and Martin wrapped up the weekend series against Minnesota with a 3-for-9 performance.
Mullins, unfortunately, hasn’t had anything go his way recently, registering just two hits in his last 39 at-bats, and he’s now the league’s worst qualified hitterat .094.
It should be noted that Mullins’ mark is 28 points lower than Josh Harrison, the second-worst hitter right now, and no other qualified hitter outside of Mullins has an average below .100.
In terms of advanced statistics, the centerfielder ranks in the bottom five percent of the MLB in eight categories, including Exit Velocity (82.6) and Hard Hit % (17.3), per Statcast.
