Pats Cut Ties With Rutgers Football Legend Kenny Britt

Rutgers football legend Kenny Britt was released by the New England Patriots on August 22nd, leaving his career in limbo going forward.

After a legendary career with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Kenny Britt has had a rollercoaster experience in the NFL. On August 22nd, it was another dip on the ride for Britt as the New England Patriots officially released the 29-year-old wide receiver.

Britt’s stint with New England ended after just three catches at the tail end of the 2017 season. Now, with a nagging hamstring injury and back-to-back disappointing stops (Cleveland and New England), his NFL career could be over.

While at Rutgers, Britt set the record for receiving yards in a season (1,232 in 2007) and then broke his own record the next year (1,371 in 2008). His single-season record still stands and he’s also the all-time receiving yards leader at 3,043. In his three-year college career, Britt was named first team All-Big East in 2008 and second team All-Big East in 2007.

Eventually, he was taken in the first round by the Tennessee Titans. Since then, he’s caught 329 balls for 5,137 yards in 116 games. His reception count is second to only Ray Rice (369 receptions) for Rutgers’ players in the NFL but his yardage mark is tops. In addition, his 32 career touchdowns in the NFL is the most by any Rutgers’ alumni. Mohamed Sanu, currently with the Atlanta Falcons, should break both records by the time he’s finished.

Britt has played with four NFL teams in his career, recording one 1,000-yard season in 2016 with the Los Angeles Rams.
