Redskins: Case Keenum 2019 Salary Less Than Half of ’18

Newly-acquired QB Case Keenum will make less than half of his 2018 salary with the Redskins in 2019.

Without a reliable quarterback lined up for 2019, the Washington Redskins have been on the hunt. Last month, they missed out on Joe Flacco and in recent weeks, there have been talks about the team trading for Arizona Cardinals QB Josh Rosen. On Thursday, however, the Redskins reportedly agreed on a trade that will bring NFL veteran Case Keenum to the burgundy and gold from Denver.

Keenum has bounced around the NFL since his record-breaking college career ended, though he proved in 2017 that he can have major success under the right circumstances. As a member of the Minnesota Vikings in ’17, he threw 22 touchdowns and just seven picks while leading the team to the NFC Championship Game.

The breakout year in ’17 earned him a lot of respect around the league and subsequently a lot of money. Last year, he earned $18 million with Denver, according to Spotrac, but he failed to repeat his on-field performance.

For the trade to work, Keenum restructured his deal. Instead of earning the load he did in ’18, he’ll earn $7 million (split by the two teams) in 2019 — less than half.

Per Mike Klis, the Broncos also paid Keenum $500k to restructure the deal.

Per Spotrac, Keenum’s cap hit will be $3.5 million, while Colt McCoy — who Keenum will compete with for the starting QB spot — has a cap hit of $3.375 million. Alex Smith, who won’t even be in the equation next year, carries a $20.4 million cap hit for the upcoming season.
