Remember ‘Snacks’ From Jackson State? He’s Up For an ESPY & You Can Vote
One of the last feel-good sports moments before the coronavirus really ramped up came from a team manager from Jackson State’s basketball team named ‘Snacks’ Lee.
Playing in their final home contest, head coach Wayne Brent inserted ‘Snacks’ (real name Thomas Lee) into the game for his first-ever D-1 hoops action. Wearing No. 35, ‘Snacks’ sent the crowd into a frenzy when he drained a three-pointer from way downtown. The shot came right in front of his team’s bench and everyone was on their feet willing the shot in. The team’s reaction was priceless and shows how valued ‘Snacks’ is to the team.
‘Snacks’ also got a chance to play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, a game they won. The conference tournament win over Alcorn St. turned out to be their final game due to the pandemic, and it’s quite possible they would have gone on to make the NCAA Tournament had the coronavirus not happened.
Fast forward to now, ‘Snacks’ is back in the spotlight as part of the ESPYS, the highest-profile sports award show. ‘Snacks’ is a finalist in the Can’t-Stop-Watching Moment category, which you can vote for here.
There were initially 16 moments up for the award before a vote to eight and then four. ‘Snacks’ was the eight-seed but pulled a major upset in round two, beating the top seed to reach the finals.
The other three moments are below:
The ESPYS will air on Sunday, June 21st at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
