Royal Farms Arena to Host Maryland in Charm City College Classic

The basketball history at Royal Farms Arena (formerly the Baltimore Civic Center) is vast and impressive, yet largely unknown outside of Baltimore. For instance, did you know that Baltimore’s biggest arena once hosted an NBA All-Star Game? Or that an NBA team called Royal Farms Arena home for an entire decade? It’s OK, not many people do, and it’s understandable because there’s not much in the way of sports that goes on there these days.
But that’s going to change this weekend, at least for one night; Royal Farms Arena will host the inaugural Charm City College Classic on Saturday, December 8th.
The event is headlined by the state’s biggest program, Maryland, as they face off against 2017 Final Four participant Loyola Chicago at 4:00 P.M ET. Prior to the aforementioned game, two Baltimore teams — Towson and Morgan State — will warm up the crowd with a game of their own.
While the event is certainly exciting, it will not stop the push for a new, updated arena in the City of Baltimore. Several proposals have been put forth over the last decade and according to The Baltimore Sun, a team was created in 2016 to “explore expansion of the Baltimore Convention Center as well as construction of a new downtown arena and hotel.”
Ted Leonsis,
As of now, the only major sports team that uses Royal Farms Arena as their home digs is the Baltimore Brigade of the Arena Football League. Entertainment, on the other hand, is steady at RFA. Later this month, Martin Lawrence and the WWE will all have events at the arena, followed by Kelly Clarkson, Alabama, and The Impractical Jokers in 2019. See a full list of events here.
Tickets start at just $21.00 for the Charm City College Classic (presented by Charm City Charities) and can be found here.
