Surprise Winners From MLB’s Opening Weekend
When I started writing this piece, the Marlins only had four players test positive for COVID-19. This morning, that number ballooned to double digits and now, frankly, I don’t know if the league is going to pull the plug at some point in the near future. They should have canceled Sunday’s game instead of moving forward and it could have cost some Miami (or even Philadelphia) players a positive test. Nonetheless, we just had a full weekend of baseball. Here are the guys who won the weekend you may not have expected.
Winners from MLB’s Opening Weekend
Bundy’s career in Baltimore was up-and-down to say the least, and the last two years in the Charm City have resulted in a 5.13 ERA and 15-31 record in 61 starts. He wasn’t getting a ton of support from the bats but he was far too inconsistent. That said, a change of scenery can do a lot. Bundy was dynamite in his Angels debut, going 6.2 innings of one-run ball while scattering just three hits. Last season, he only went 6.2+ in a handful of starts.
You asked and we heard you. Here is Dylan Bundy.

Baltimore Orioles / Jose Iglesias
Speaking of the O’s, they just won a series against the Red Sox. Yeah, they were projected as the worst team in baseball. What’s more, their two W’s weren’t cheap. The O’s outscored Boston 14-6 in Games 2 and 3. Former MLB All-Star and first-year Oriole Jose Iglesias led the charge with seven hits in 13 ABs. He’s now tied for the MLB lead in hits.

Lewis is one of Seattle’s best up-and-coming players and he’s playing the part. The M’s didn’t do much as a team but you can’t take your eyes off Lewis. The outfielder hit two monster homers in the first two games of the season and has a 1.371 OPS through three games.

COVID-19 outbreak aside, the Marlins are 2-1 through three games and Miggy is a big reason why. Though he’s been the heart-and-soul of the Marlins lineup for the last two seasons, he’s never had a season with an OPS over .736. If things stay on track, that could change this year. He’s off to a 7-for-10 start with a double, triple, home run and 5 RBIs.
