The Fall of the Dark Knight: Matt Harvey DFA’d by Mets After Failed Bullpen Experiment

It’s been published a lot lately but the fall from grace by former All-Star Matt Harvey has been epic. It all started in Game 5 of the 2015 World Series when he forced his way back on the field and accelerated from there. In the three seasons since he choked away said World Series game, Harvey has gone 9-19 with zero complete games and a 5.93 ERA through 212 innings. His most recent innings have been especially bad, and from the bullpen — a benchmark moment on Harvey’s sad timeline.

On Friday, the timeline hit an all-time low with the Mets’ decision to designate him for assignment. No one is surprised; no one is disappointed. The guy is just not competing anymore and seems to lack the heart necessary to survive in New York’s spotlight.

The decision comes a day after he was booed off the field by his hometown fans. Harvey had allowed five earned runs in just two innings of relief, complete with a bunch of walks and hard-hit balls.

After receiving the news, Harvey declined an assignment to the minor leagues.

Per ESPN, the front office will now have a week to trade or hand him his outright release. Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson was quoted in the article saying that there are “people out there who are willing to take a shot on Matt Harvey.” Judging by those words, I’d say he’s getting a straight-up release.
