The Netflix-Hulu Streaming War Has Been Heating Up
The Netflix-Hulu streaming war continues to heat up with a pair of strategic counterpunches from Hulu over the last few weeks.
While Netflix, undoubtedly, puts out more original content than Hulu, the latter continues to be a thorn in the side of the former.
In 2017, despite releasing a lot fewer shows than Netflix, Hulu was able to celebrate a big Emmy win over Netflix in the Outstanding Drama Series category. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale beat out two Netflix shows (Stranger Things, House of Cards) for the win, giving them some bragging rights in a category Netflix is yet to win. Since then, the two streaming companies have continued to press on, each growing their brand in a positive direction. Netflix has become a place where the biggest directors can make content freely (ie: Martin Scorsese) while Hulu has become a go-to service for cord-cutters in search of affordable live television.
Over the last few weeks, however, Hulu has begun to throw counterpunches in the face of Netflix. First, they surprised everyone with their release of Fyre Fraud, a documentary about the disastrous Fyre Festival that Netflix was also prepared to document in their own film, Fyre, just a few days later.
Personally, I’d say both documentaries are worth watching. The Netflix version is a little bit better but there’s something to be said of Hulu landing first.
Hulu wasn’t done with their slights, though, not by a long shot. In a brilliant move, Hulu decided to lower their base price by two dollars per month immediately after Netflix raised their subscription by the same amount.
The price decrease for Hulu subscribers goes into effect on February 26th.
What can you say? Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd likes to throw shots at ESPN Radio sometimes, and the same goes for dueling fast food chains and political parties. This is what happens when you’re fighting for market share. That said, both services have their strong suits and both are worth subscribing to — all the beef is just great entertainment.
