Trent Dilfer: Baker’s Week 6 Pick-Six was “a High School Mistake”
During an appearance on Fox Sports 1’s The Herd with Colin Cowherd, former NFL quarterback and current QB guru Trent Dilfer called Baker Mayfield‘s Week 6 pick-six “a high school mistake.”
The play, which you can see below, came early in the first quarter. Minkah Fitzpatrick, the ‘robber’ in the Cover One Robber Dilfer mentioned, jumped the route and took it to the house from 34 yards out. Cover One Robber looks like Cover 2 but instead of dropping back into coverage, the ‘robber’ reads the quarterback in hopes of making a play exactly like Fitzpatrick made. There’s a breakdown of Cover One Robber here by Ross Tucker.

Cleveland wound up losing 38-7 to Pittsburgh. Baker, who was a little banged up to be fair, finished 10-of-18 for 119 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. With Pittsburgh up 31-7, Baker was pulled for veteran Case Keenum. In Keenum’s three drives, the Browns turned the ball over on downs twice and punted once.
For the season, Cleveland is 4-2. They play at rival Cincinnati in Week 7 at 1:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
Dilfer, who won a Super Bowl with Baltimore, is currently the head coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, TN. He’s also the head coach of Elite 11, which works with the best prep quarterbacks in the nation.
Later in the show, Dilfer did note that he wasn’t ready to give up on Baker.
