Troy Aikman Eviscerated The Athletic Kansas City on Twitter
In case you forgot, Troy Aikman won three Super Bowl rings in the mid-90s as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Don’t worry, though, he reminded everyone on Twitter tonight in response to a silly tweet by The Athletic Kansas City.

Yes, Patrick Mahomes is throwing touchdowns at a mind-blowing rate, but why even bring Troy Aikman into it? Never forget that Aikman was an NFL quarterback when the game was totally different. The rules are tailored to protect quarterbacks in the modern NFL and defensive backs are allowed a lot less contact with receivers. Plus, Aikman played in the running back era; in 1995, the Dallas Cowboys combined for 495 rushing attempts, a full 108 more than the Kansas City Chiefs had in 2018. Now multiply that over a career, in addition to the rule changes, etc. and it’s not a shocker that Mahomes is blowing Aikman’s stats out of the water.
It’s like comparing Steph Curry’s three-point numbers to shooters from the 90s, it’s a totally different game.
Mahomes is on pace for a great career but in the NFL, legacy is tied to rings. He’ll get one I’m sure, but I get what Troy is saying here.
