UConn Football’s First Schedule as an FBS Independent

UPDATE: UConn canceled its 2020 football season.

UConn officially joined the Big East today, making its football team officially an FBS Independent. The Big East Conference doesn’t sponsor football these days. UConn had been competing in the American Athletic Conference since 2013 but success was few and far between. They didn’t put together one winning season between 2013-19. Becoming an independent is a good option for the Huskies, far better than dropping all the way to FCS. If they went the FCS route, they would certainly lose some fan support and boosters, and the brand would be unquestionably tarnished. Their athletic department can’t afford either. Plus, as an FBS program, you get more money for “buy games” and it surely made securing a TV deal easier.

Scheduling as an independent can be difficult logistically but I like seeing the mix of teams. UConn’s lineup won’t be as littered with powerhouses as Notre Dame but with their brand power, they’ll likely have the second-strongest independent schedule of the seven programs — Notre Dame, UConn, Army, Liberty, New Mexico State, BYU, UMass — moving forward. Here’s what they have on the docket for 2020.
