Hoos Baseball Program Officially Back in College Baseball Tournament
On the same day the men’s lacrosse team won their second consecutive national title, the Virginia baseball team heard their name called during the college baseball tournament selection show on ESPN2. The Wahoos, who started the season in a serious slump before finishing on a tear, were picked to play in the Columbia region as a No. 3 seed. In addition to UVA, the Columbia region includes nearby Old Dominion, host South Carolina, and cinderella team Jacksonville.
Virginia, who hasn’t made the field since 2017, is one of eight ACC programs. Only the SEC (9) has more representatives. Locally, Liberty, VCU, and Norfolk State join UVA and ODU in the field of 64. It will be NSU’s first-ever appearance.
Virginia will open up play on Friday, June 4th against South Carolina. Their first game will be on ESPN2 at 12:00 p.m. ET.
The team watched the selection show together on Monday afternoon, right in the outfield at Disharoon Park. They put the national TV broadcast up on the big board then celebrated when they heard their name called near the end of the program.
This Hoos squad is easy to root for regardless, but seeing how they came back from the brink of a lost season is truly remarkable. A berth in the tourney seemed like definitive ‘no’ about halfway through the year, yet they just took it one series at a time and started stringing ’em together. They got hot at the right time and take that vibe into the big dance. I’m surely not alone when saying that I’m absolutely pumped to see the next week of baseball.
