Andrew Abbott Starting Virginia’s 1st College World Series Game

Virginia baseball ace Andrew Abbott will get the ball for the team’s first game in the 2021 College World Series. The Hoos play Tennessee on Sunday, June 20th at 2 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2. A complete schedule can be found here.

Abbott is one of the main reasons why the Wahoos are in the position they’re currently in. When their backs were against the wall midway through the season, it was Abbott’s Friday night starts that got the team off on the right foot. Between April 16th (vs. Louisville) and May 28th (vs. Notre Dame in ACC Tournament), the Hoos were 6-0 in games Abbott started. One of those games, May 14th vs. Wake Forest, resulted in a no-hitter for Abbott and the bullpen.

Abbott, the No. 62 prospect on MLB.com, has also been showered with awards recently. The leftie was named an All-American by three different outlets.

In the NCAA Tournament, Abbott started two games for Virginia. He went 5.2 innings in Virginia’s 4-3 loss to South Carolina in the regionals, and five innings in Virginia’s 6-5 loss to Dallas Baptist in the Super Regionals. He also made one relief appearance, throwing one inning in UVA’s 4-3 regional final win over Old Dominion.

Abbott’s season stats can be found here.
