Washington Post: Kim English to Earn $925k Annually as George Mason Head Coach
Newly hired George Mason head coach Kim English will earn $925,000 per year, according to Steven Goff of The Washington Post. Per the report, the salary is 25.5 percent higher than that of Dave Paulsen, who was fired after six NCAA Tournament-less seasons in Fairfax.
English will get $450k in base pay, plus another $475k in guaranteed supplemental compensation. Potential bonuses include $25k each spring if he stays at the school, $50k for academic performances, and $15k for either a regular-season or conference tournament title. If he qualifies for the Big Dance, something the program hasn’t done since 2011, the DMV native will get $50k. Each victory in the tournament up to the Final Four will net him another $50k, and if he can get the team to the Final Four, he’ll have another $75k coming his way. Each win in the Final Four equals $100k.
George Mason also paid English, an assistant at Tennessee the last two seasons, $30k for moving expenses and a housing stipend of $4,500 for the first six months on the job. Goff’s report, based on a Freedom of Information Act request, also noted English would be provided with a private club membership.
As far as base salary goes, English is in the middle of the pack for the conference. On the higher end, you have VCU head coach Mike Rhoades set to receive $1.7 million this year, while UMass head coach Matt McCall and recently-fired Fordham head coach Jeff Neubauer fall into the $650k range.
English is less than two weeks into his job but he’s already made a big splash by landing a full-time starter from a power conference in the transfer market — D’Shawn Schwartz from Colorado. The move could go a long way in keeping some of the old guard around. Nine players entered the transfer portal after the coaching change, including two who already chose new programs and three who have just one year remaining. The other players in the portal — including leading scorer Jordan Miller, A-10 Freshman of the Year Tyler Kolek, and big man Josh Oduro –could return to the program if they buy into the new era of George Mason basketball.
