Mike Tobey Posts Double-Double in Slovenia’s First Olympic Basketball Game

Virginia alum Mike Tobey posted a double-double in Slovenia’s 118-100 win against Argentina in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games early Monday morning. It was the first-ever Olympic basketball game for Slovenia, which also features NBA superstar Luka Doncic.

Tobey snagged a team-high 14 rebounds while pouring in 11 points on offense. Doncic led all scorers with 48 points. The Olympic record, it should be noted, is 55 points by Oscar Schmidt in 1988.

Argentina’s squad featured current Virginia basketball player Francisco Caffaro.

Tobey, who also played two games in the NBA during the 2016-17 season, was a four-year player (2012-16) at UVA and helped them to three NCAA Tournament appearances. He was part of the loaded 2015-16 team that made a deep run in the tourney during his final year in Charlottesville. Alongside Malcolm Brogdon, London Perrantes, Devon Hall, Anthony Gill, Isaiah Wilkins, and Marial Shayok, the ’16 team made it all the way to the Elite Eight before falling in a heartbreaker to Syracuse.

Slovenia will play early Thursday morning against Japan at 12:40 a.m. ET.
