Trey Murphy III Mock Draft Omnibus
UPDATE: Murphy was taken No. 17 overall and will play his rookie season with New Orleans in 2021-22.
The NBA Draft is tonight, meaning Virginia’s own Trey Murphy III will have his pro hoops dream come true. Murphy III projects as a first-round pick after seeing his stock climb considerably in the last few months. During his lone season in Charlottesville, he wasn’t getting the kind of NBA Draft love that he’s getting now; Murphy III excelled during pre-draft workouts. Now, the former Rice transfer is firmly projected for the first round. Here’s a collection of mock drafts, and where Trey lands within them:
New York Post Mock Draft – No. 14 to Golden State
“One of the draft’s big risers, Murphy brings two essential qualities to the Warriors: size and shooting.” (via NY Post)
ESPN Mock Draft – No. 15 to Washington
“The 6-foot-9 Murphy’s stock has been skyrocketing in the pre-draft process as teams have gotten a close look at his combination of outstanding size, length and shooting prowess.” (via ESPN)
CBS Sports Mock Draft – No. 15 to Washington
“Trey Murphy at No. 15 is worth the price of admission. He has a special ability to reliably make 3-pointers and space the floor and also has positional size to be a plus-defender.” (via CBS Sports)
The Ringer Mock Draft – No. 16 to Oklahoma City
“Murphy is receiving looks in the late lottery as his draft stock has exploded in recent months. As a good shooter and an intelligent defender with size, he brings the versatility to play a wide number of roles on a winning team.” (via The Ringer)
Yahoo Sports Mock Draft – No. 21 to New York
“In his lone season at Virginia he was a 50-40-90 player, while also being a solid defender. Evaluating draft prospects out of Virginia based on their stats alone can be a fool’s errand, as the Cavaliers traditionally play at one of the slowest paces in college basketball.” (via Yahoo Sports)
Fox Sports Mock Draft – No. 24 to Houston
“The Rockets need shooters or, even more so, tradable picks with value. Murphy has both because he can knock down shots. Playing for Tony Bennett is always a plus. He knows how to defend.” (via Andy Katz/Fox Sports)
