Wahoos Overcome Kyle Guy’s 0fer to Advance to Sweet 16

On Sunday night, Virginia star Kyle Guy missed all 10 of his three-point attempts against No. 9 Oklahoma. Luckily, the Wahoos never have to rely on one guy and they overcame Guy’s stinker to advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2016.

Three players scored in double figures for Virginia, including another solid outing from Mamadi Diakite, en route to a 63-51 victory. Diakite scored a team-high 14 points, just days after turning in a 17-point outing in Virginia’s Round of 64 win. In two games, the junior big man has made 15 of 18 two-point field goals and 15 of 19 overall.

Ty Jerome (12) and De’Andre Hunter (10) were the other two double-digit scorers for the Wahoos.

Despite his poor three-point shooting, Guy did make a few two-point field goals, grabbed five boards and dished out three assists.

Moving forward, the Wahoos are set up nicely. They’ll now play No. 12 Oregon in the Sweet 16.

The Ducks weren’t even supposed to be here but they won the Pac-12 Tournament. And, although they’ve won 10 games straight, this is a team that lost to No. 208 Texas Southern earlier this year and was ranked No. 67 by KenPom not that long ago.

Don’t get me wrong, Oregon is playing good ball, but I’d rather see them than Kansas State. K-State, it should be noted, was upset by UC Irvine, who was then beaten by Oregon in the Round of 32.

Virginia and Oregon will play Friday night at 9:57 P.M ET on TBS.

Per KenPom, the Wahoos are projected to win 64-54.
