WATCH: Joey Rickard Breaks Up Chris Sale No Hitter
Red Sox starter Chris Sale had a no-hit bid going through more than five innings of work on Wednesday night at Camden Yards. He was dominating the O’s lineup up and down and if not for two hit-batters, he would have been perfect.
In typical potential no-hitter fashion, the alerts started showing up on baseball fans’ phones and Twitter started to blow up a bit. Sale was on his way to his first-ever no-hitter.
Then Joey Rickard, who was hit by Sale earlier in the game, stepped up to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and put the hoopla to bed. Rickard lined a 1-1 pitch into centerfield for the O’s first hit of the game.

Immediately after, Rickard was driven in by a double off the bat of Trey Mancini and it was a brand-new ballgame at 1-1.
Coming into the game, Rickard was hitting .198 in 34 games. With the single, he temporarily boosted his 2019 batting average over .200 (20-for-99), though the game isn’t over right now — it’s currently in extra innings — and he could be back under the Mendoza Line by the time the game wraps up. Hopefully not, though.
