San Diego traded for Mitch right before the trade deadline, one of several moves they made to bolster their squad for the stretch run and eventually the postseason. Moreland came over from Boston in exchange for minor leaguers Jeisson Rosario and Hudson Potts.
A former all-star and Gold Glove winner, Moreland was hitting .328 with eight dingers for the BoSox before the trade. Prior to his first Padres homer, he was 4-for-24 in seven games.
