WATCH: SB Nation “Foul Play: Paid in Mississippi” True Crime Docuseries
Last night, I randomly came across a four-part docuseries from SB Nation on YouTube, titled Foul Play: Paid in Mississippi. I flipped on episode No. 1 and immediately got hooked. By the time the series was done, it was way past my bedtime but it was absolutely worth it.
As a whole, the series outlines the scandal at Ole Miss. However, it’s Laremy Tunsil‘s draft-night situation (gas mask, anyone?) that really draws the viewer in. This takes place in episode No. 1, setting the stage for a true crime, sports, and unsolved mystery gumbo. It’s truly fascinating.
SB Nation reporter Steven Godfrey, a guy I hadn’t heard of before this docuseries, leads the investigation and definitely will see his stock rise because of it. An Ole Miss alum, Godfrey gets in contact with several “bag men” and follows the rabbit hole all the way through for a five-year investigation. Legendary political commentator James Carville makes several appearances in the series, as well as a host of other SB Nation reporters.
Each episode is a shade under 30 minutes, resulting in about two hours of your time.

Another highlight from the docuseries is the “Wade in the Water” intro song. It reminds me of the intro from True Detective season one, bleeding southern true crime with every word. The Hugh Freeze text message in episode No. 4 is also a notable moment.
Tunsil is now in his third season with the Miami Dolphins.
SB Nation is owned by Vox Media.
