We The Fans: Former MLB Pitcher Mike Adams Featured on New ESPN Series
Mike Adams pitched in 408 MLB games, mostly as a set-up guy. While his record was just above .500, Adams was one of the best eighth-inning pitchers in baseball and finished his career with an ERA of 2.41.
Even with all the big contracts — Adams made over $20 million in his career — and fanfare he’s received as a player, Mike Adams is fanatical when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys. So much so that he’s been featured alongside a bunch of regular Cowboys’ fanatics in the second series of ESPN’s We The Fans.
Last year, they covered fans of the Chicago Bears.
The new season centers around Adams and five other subjects as they navigate through a season of Dallas Cowboys’ football. Some of the footage is from Cowboys Stadium, while others are from their day-to-day lives.
Adams, who was born and raised in nearby Corpus Christi and went to college at Texas A&M, actually had his career highlight right across the street from Cowboys Stadium. In 2011, he was picked up mid-season by the Texas Rangers to bolster the team’s bullpen. They’d eventually make it all the way to the World Series, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in an awesome seven-game series.
In the first episode of We The Fans, Adams credits this as the highlight of his career.
It’s normal to see regular middle-aged men going crazy for their teams but to see a former professional athlete do so is awesome. In some ways, it humanizes them. Like, think about how many fanatics there must be for the Rangers who would have died to meet him during their World Series run. Now, that’s flipped. It’s crazy.
The show is available on ESPN’s newest service, ESPN+. Trust me, it’s worth a watch — especially if you’re a Cowboys fan!
Adams finished his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2014.
