White Sox Tim Anderson Wins AL Batting Title

After hitting just .240 last year, Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson rallied this year to win the AL Batting Title with a .335 batting average. Anderson overcame an injury that sidelined him for most of July, as well as a losing season from his team to capture the honor.

Going into the final day of the 2019 season, he was hitting .337 but even after going 0-for-2 on Sunday, it was enough for him to take home the crown.

Anderson entered the last day of the season with a .337 average and eight-point lead on the Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu (.329) for the batting title. LeMahieu needed to go 5-for-5 and Anderson go 0-for-5 for Anderson to lose it, but both were hitless in their first two at-bats.

With the title clinched at .335, manager Rick Renteria replaced Anderson with rookie Danny Mendick.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times, Anderson took a curtain call for White Sox nation when the honor was plastered on the scoreboard.

For the year, the 26-year-old shortstop also hit 18 home runs and stole 17 bases.

Prior to 2019, he had never hit above .300.

With Ketel Marte and Christian Yelich both unable to increase their batting averages because of injury, Anderson’s .335 batting average is also the best in the entire league for the 2019 MLB season.

”If we had 26 guys playing the way Tim Anderson plays, we’d be thrilled,” general manager Rick Hahn said via the Chicago Sun-Times.
