Worst Nightmare: McCutchen, Longoria Totally Flop Through Five Games
Through five games, the San Francisco Giants are off to a 2-3 start and have the worst offense in baseball. While it’s early and may not matter in the long run, they were supposed to be getting back to the glory days.
In the offseason, they made a big splash by bringing in two legitimate stars — Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria — to put alongside Buster Posey, Joe Panik, and Hunter Pence. However, they’ve brought nothing but a gaping hole to the Giants’ batting order to start the year. Combined, the pair of former All-Stars are hitting an abysmal .076 in 39 at-bats.
Andrew McCutchen: 2 for 20 with six K’s
Evan Longoria: 1 for 19 with six K’s
It should be noted that Longoria’s only hit was a home run.
Rankings-wise, the Giants rank No. 30 in runs scored. They’ve been shut-out twice, scored one run twice, and are hitting just .209 as a team (24th in MLB).
As it stands now, No. 2-6 in their lineup — Panik, McCutchen, Posey, Longoria, Pence — could be the most accomplished of any in baseball. With that said, while their batting order still looks legit, they’ll need to start putting it together if they want to return to the National League Playoffs.
