Boise State Cut its Baseball Program…Again
The Boise State Broncos returned to the baseball field this past spring for the first time in 40 years. They were able to play 14 games before the COVID-19 outbreak shut down sports. Their record was a respectable 9-5 but it looks like those 14 games will be it for the Broncos’ in terms of baseball. Reports came out today that the university is cutting the program again, as well as the swimming and diving team, amid budget cuts due to the pandemic.
The move will save “nearly $3 million” according to school officials.

“This is one of the hardest decisions athletic departments have to make, but it comes at a time when we are facing the most serious financial challenge we have ever seen,” Apsey said in the release via the Idaho Statesman.
Bowling Green’s baseball program was subject to the same fate in mid-May but was rescued when donors and alumni raised $1.5 million. Maybe there’s hope for the Broncos, though the 40-year absence means baseball isn’t woven into the school’s fabric.
Despite their long absence, Boise State does have one former MLB alumni with an impressive resume, five-time MLB All-Star Larry Jackson.
