Cam Newton Leads First GW Drive as a Patriot

According to Pro Football Reference, Cam Newton had 17 game-winning drives in his NFL career before the 2020 season. He added another on Monday Night Football against the Jets, his first as a member of the New England Patriots. It came in style as he drove the Pats offense 45 yards in 47 seconds across eight plays to set up a game-winning 51-yard field goal from Nick Folk.

Newton made multiple big plays on the final drive, but none bigger than a 20-yard completion to Jakobi Meyers (his new favorite target) with time ticking away. The completion got the Pats to the Jets 33-yard line where they used their final timeout with three seconds left. Folk, of course, did the rest and the Patriots snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 3-5 on the season with their 30-27 victory. On the drive, Cam completed three passes for 36 yards and added a five-yard rush.

Cam completed 27-of-35 passes in the game for 274 yards, adding two touchdowns on the ground. He didn’t turn the ball over, which is good news because it’s been an issue as of late. Meyers had a career game on his birthday, snagging 12 passes for 169 yards.

The Patriots started 2-1 under Cam, with their only loss coming by one score at arguably the toughest road venue in the NFL. A positive COVID-19 test for Cam derailed everything, however, and they’ll be hoping this win gets them back on track.
