WATCH: Garrett Gilbert Throws First NFL TD

Quarterback play has been a major problem area for the Dallas Cowboys as of late, leading the team to turn to veteran Garrett Gilbert in Week 9 against Pittsburgh. Gilbert, whose father was a longtime NFL backup, had never started a game prior to Sunday and only had six NFL pass attempts despite being drafted in 2014.

Gilbert played very well compared to the other guys who have filled in for Dak Prescott, though a win slipped from the Cowboys’ grasp late. Altogether, he was 21-for-38 for 243 yards and led the first meaningful* touchdown drive since Dak went down in Week 5. The touchdown was a 20-yard strike from Gilbert to rookie CeeDee Lamb in the second quarter that gave the Boys an early 10-0 lead.

It was the first NFL touchdown of any kind for Gilbert.

*The only touchdown drive since Dallas’ Week 5 game against New York was a meaningless touchdown down 31-3 against Arizona.

Dallas lost 24-19 after getting outscored 15-0 in the fourth quarter.

Gilbert starting for the Cowboys is a storybook occurrence; he’s a Texas kid who bounced around for years after spending three years at the state’s most notable school (Texas) and two years at the city’s most notable school (SMU).
